Dresden weather is classified as continental, its conditions following predominantly moderate patterns. The city is positioned in the Elbe Valley area of eastern Germany, where on the whole Dresden weather conditions are strongly affected by its somewhat sheltered position.

Dresden weather can usually be relied upon to keep a somewhat predictable disposition, with characteristically warm and often hot summers, followed by pleasant autumn months and mild to cold winters. Have ever, despite the mild tendencies of the Dresden winter, frosty nights are not unusual during both December and January.

The average temperature in January is −0.7 °C and in July 18.1 °C. The inland city temperature is 10.2 °C averaged through out the year. February and March are the driest months, with precipitation of 40 mm. The wettest months are July and August, with 61 mm per month.

The Klotzsche region of Dresden is placed in a rather elevated position at 227 meters above sea level and is home to the region's weather station, making this area of the city more exposed to the elements and thus experiences greater extremes than the inner-city areas. Average temperatures in Klotzsche hover between 1 to 3 °C.

Summer weather in Dresden
Dresden weather during the summer months is characteristically hotter than many other cities in the region of Germany. The most pleasant weather in Dresden falls between April and October, with highs regularly exceeding 28°C during both July and August. With that in mind, the city also receives the majority of precipitation between the months June and August. Evening temperatures during summer usually remain above 20°C, offering ample and perfect opportunities for an evening stroll or outdoor activities like dances, concerts and theatrical events.

Thanks to the predominantly fine conditions that characterise Dresden weather during the late spring and summer seasons, a host of outdoor events await the art lover. Running between May and June the Dresden Music Festival welcomes summer in the best possible manner, as theatres, gardens and palaces become the backdrop upon which great live orchestral music is played. At the same time, during June a staggering 200 and over events that cover a wide range of artsy events (drama, dancing, concerts etc) are staged at five  villages along the River Elbe.

Winter weather in Dresden
Dresden weather during winter has been known to experience overcast and rather cloudy days, with the occasional sunshine bursting through the clouds. Rain showers can make an appearance at any time and even though the majority are not excessive, it is advisable to pack clothing to suit both sunshine and rain. February and March tend to be the months with the least amount of rain. Average daily temperatures for the month of January – by far, the coldest of the year - is 2°C. At the same time, while snowfall during winter is scarce it should definitely not be ruled out completely. Weather in Dresden during April and October is significantly cooler in comparison.
